Whether you worship in a traditional sanctuary, a conventional hall or a recycled store front; the building is more than a shelter or a point of gathering. The spaces we worship in are blank canvases, ready to be brought to life and envelop the individual with a more fulfilling presence. Worship is an experience, and even the most traditional services and styles can benefit by painting the walls with light, the air with aromas and filling the crevices with sound that enhances the underlying message. Throughout the centuries this idea was apparent as we see many churches, cathedrals and even homes decorated with frescos, mosaics, candles, incense and other elements affecting the senses.
Unfortunately, many places we gather for worship today have lost this environment, as words overshadow experience. The message and the individual should remain the focus, but by adjusting the environment we can better convey the content and better welcome the person, bringing forth a more complete experience. It is time we start working with a divine canvas.
